another Kyle Lohse dissapointment..

Motivation:

"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else
is the greatest accomplishment." ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Diary:
b: eggs and turkey sausage
s: protien bar
l: turkey, wild rice, vitamins
s: mixed greens and hard boiled egg
d: 2 hot dogs and soda (at Twins game)
s: peanut butter sandwich and orange
s: small bowl natural cereal and soy milk
g: elliptical 2.21 miles, walk 1 mile, sauna, walk outside,
g2: walk at and around metrodome

Notes:

I had a great conversation with my friends during the Twins game. While Lohse was stinking up the field, (hey, that is where the StarTribune stench went...) and Tigers were hitting balls left and right, I was having good discussion about what I am doing and where I am going. I enjoyed it, but maybe it was a little too much 'me centered'. Oh, Twins lost - 9 to 6. Torii Hunter bobblehead day, and luckily enough, we got bobbleheads. (odd) Also, Torii hit a sweet home run (too bad more people were not on base.)

The increased workout time this week really has made an affect. I feel my body responding to the additional 3 minutes of elliptical. I think that I am really putting more effort into the workout as well, and will continue to do so as I lose lbs. I am feeling a "tired" feeling in my back, shoulder and legs. They feel like they have lost all their energy, but it is not a painful feeling, and it goes away after a good rest.

My sleep used to be irratic, tossing and turning, and waking up for no reason. I am finding now that I am sleeping through the night without much interruption, and some days, after a lot of work, I experience what feels like 5 minutes between my head hitting the pillow to the sun coming up and the day starting again. It is kind of akward, feeling as if "I just went to bed, how can it be morning already?", but I feel refreshed. (There was a StarTrek Next Generation episode, where the aliens would take the crew in their sleep and do experiments on them. The "Clicky People" is how I describe this episode. My sleep lately reminds me of this, because I don't feel like I was in my bed for a full 6-7 hours. ) But, It is maybe a sign that my body is really tired and squeezing every last drop out of my down-time.

I think I already mentioned about my breathing becoming more free. I am really feeling good about my breathing.

I also haven't had a stomach ache for a while. I don't remember having a stomach-ache since I started working out. This is somewhat of a liberating feeling, because I would tend to have stomach problems every day, and this would affect what I could do, where I could go, and how I felt around other people. I felt really good yesterday, and wondered if "this is how life is supposed to feel" I feel like I am really making a good step with my health.

HOWEVER, I am becoming increasingly frustrated by my gut fat. The old me just dealt with being huge, and not much thought put into being embarrased or upset with myself. I just figured this is it, and lived with it. I was bigger then, but now that I am a little smaller, I am being very critical about my gut. It is in the way, frankly. It is the lower gut area that is the "dunlop". It is like a mosquito that serves no purpose but to annoy me during my workouts, and when I am getting dressed. Yet, this is going to take forever to get rid of.... AAAAGGGHH. Make it go away. It becomes more evident on days that I have to be in a confined space, such as an airplane, golf cart, or baseball stadium seats. my ass now actually fits into the seat, but my overhang is taking up the rest of the space. What an embarrassing tub-o-lard. I get self-concious and want to make sure people around me aren't so grossed out sitting by me that it affects their enjoyment of the game.

I think it is reducing, but it is taking too long. I hope that this goes down by October, because I really don't want to have such a huge gut when running the 5K. Funny that now that I have been working out for 4 months, now I am noticing how fat I am. I have to remind myself that I am less fat than before, but still very obese. It is hard to imagine what losing another 70 lbs is going to be like, and I am curious to see if this gut fat can be coaxed to move.

venting over!

I had a really good conversation the other day on accident. I called up a good friend of mine the other day, but he wasn't home. His wife answered, and I spoke with her for a while. Turns out, she is training for a 5 mile run! I was interested to hear her thoughts and concerns regarding her training. I will have to keep my radar on to see if she is successful in her training. I am sure she will be. Good luck! I am very much pulling for you.

Saturday night - the first 5K timing. Wish me luck.

More "fun facts" from Men's Health:

Exercise may rejuvenate your brain, according to a Salk Institute study.

There's more proof slow-digesting foods provide the best fuel for endurance runners. At England's Loughborough University, nine men ran for 90 minutes at 70 percent of their VO2 max, then ate three equal meals and snacks from either a low or high glycemic-index diet. (Glycemic index is the rate at which carbohydrates convert to blood sugar.) the next morning, the low-GI group ran about 13 minutes longer than the high-GI group. Low-GI group burned more fat and kept more carbohydrate fuel in reserve. The meal: beans, cheese, and lettuce on a whole-wheat tortilla.

Overweight men trying to improve their cardiovascular health should be more concrned with the amount of exercise they do and not its intensity, according to a study in the journal Chest. Duke researchers working with 133 people for 9 months found that among unfit overweight people, increasing the amount of exercise leads to significant improvements in fitness, while raising intensity doesn't. Jogging or walking 12 miles a week at 40 to 50% of your peak heart rate is recommended. As time goes on, slowly raise to 20 miles per week at the same intensity.

I have no idea..

"Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first,
the lesson afterward." ~Vernon Law

Diary:

b: eggs and turkey sausage
s: protien bar
l: chicken noodle soup, xs, vitamins
s: ham and cheese slices
d: onion soup and side salad
s: turkey burger, green pepper, pickles
g: eliptical 2.26 miles, walk 1 mile, sauna

Notes:

It is starting to come together. I think I have a few takers on the 5K challenge. K.L. and perhaps brother K.L. are in. C.N. might join. Memphis is in. Any other takers? Let me know if you want to run in October.

Today, let's have a little fun, as work is getting me down.

More "fun facts" from Men's Health:

Really Fresh Fish Sticks
Cut a salmon or tuna steak into finger-size portions. Dip the sticks into an egg-white batter and roll them in a bowl of bread crumbs. Freeze, and then bake when hungry.

Fruit Sorbet from a Can
Step 1: Buy a can of fruit. Peaches or pineapple in light syrup works well.
Step 2: Freeze it overnight.
Step 3: Place the can in hot water for 1 minute.
Step 4: Remove the lid and pour any liquid into a blender.
Step 5: Remove the bottom of the can, slide out the fruit, and chop it into 1-inch pieces.
Step 6: Throw the fruit into the blender and puree.
Step 7: Eat .

Buffalo Breasts
Use skinless chicken-breast tenders. Marinate them overnight in a mixture of Louisiana hot sauce, olive oil, garlic powder, and red-wine vinegar, then roast at 400 degrees for 15 minutes.

Low-Fat Pita Chips
Step 1: Use low-fat pitas in your favorite flavor. (Whole-wheat pitas provide 5 extra grams of fiber per 8 chips.)
Step 2: Cut pitas into 8 wedges.
Step 3: Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet in a 350 degrees oven for 7 to 10 minutes, or until the tips turn golden brown.
Step 4: Serve warm with guacamole and salsa, or let cool and then seal in a plastic bag for later use.

Put a Lid on It
You can dramatically reduce the amount of oil needed to pan-fry foods simply by keeping a lid on the pot. By catching and returning moisture that would normally escape, the lid eliminates the need for more oil.

Grate Your Cheese
When it comes to cheese, it pays to get handy with a grater. Scrape some Parmesan or other hard cheese on your sandwich or chef's salad, and you'll save fat calories over standard sliced fare. You'll naturally use less.

Goodbyes and Hellos

Motivation:

"I cannot discover that anyone knows enough to say definitely
what is and what is not possible." Henry Ford

Diary:

Sorry I have been absent for a while. This has been a busy week.

Monday - no gym, and no food until dinner, when I had a big steak and potatoes (and beer)
Tuesday - elliptical 2.25 miles, walk 1 mile, sauna. (This was a little weird. I set the elliptical to go one additional minute, but it put on 3 additional minutes, and I didn't pay attention, so I ended up going way past the 2 mile mark and did another 1/4 mile. It didn't feel bad, although I noticed I worked hader.) On Tuesday, I restarted my 6 meals a day thing.
Wednesday -
b: bagel and peanut butter, coffee
s: protien shake
l: bbq pork and green beans, xs, vitamins
s: celery and peanut butter
d: turkey burgers
g: elliptical 2.27 miles, walk 1 mile, sauna (again, I tried to set the elliptical to 23 minutes, but I guess it has dislexia, becuase it just wont take it. again, it went 25 minutes, and I didn't notice until I was done. There is nothing wrong with doing this much, but it was just unexpected based on the way I understand how the elliptical is supposed to work. )

Notes:

After saying goodbye to my sister and J-man, and all of their stuff - I didn't get much done on the weekend. I didn't watch Shawshank, instead I unloaded a trunk full of wood and other things that J-man decided to give me at the last minute. I really appreciate all of their generousity, my patio is mostly hand me downs, and that is fine with me.

So, ongoing struggles with my car (the one with the patriotic mirrors) have been dogging me for the last few years. It had a bad back end, and I spend a lot to fix it, but it was again becoming problemsome. It rumbled, and there were loose parts that caused the noise to get worse. It would bottom out if the road was bumpy, which I know is probably due to my added weight, which it probably wasn't meant to handle, lets see... there were lights out, and overall light problems - they would come on for now reason and I couldn't turn them off without pulling the fuse.. the hazzards didn't work, and when I tried to use them they shorted out the turn signals, the windshield water line had a hole in it, that I tried to fix thrice, but it kept breaking, so I could never wash my windshield using normal means, the gas mileage overall was reducing, I would find loose bolts everywhere, and then on sunday it was found that I was loosing coolant, and could have oil in the coolant reservoir.

Single, none of these issues were a problem, but together I was just tired of dealing with car issues. I couldn't take it on a road trip and feel safe. For the last 3 years, I have been telling myself that "just one more year" I will get a new car, but it was so nice not having to make payments....

On monday, I found the car I wanted, and I bought it (or , the bank bought it, and I am buying it from the bank). They actually took my old car, (goodbye, old friend, we had fun...) and now I am driving a new vehicle. It is a gift to myself for losing weight, although it is an early gift. I didn't think I was going to purchase something until after I had reached size 52 pants, which I am still a ways away. HOWEVER, I do need a car to go to work, and to go to baseball games and now to drive to see my family. I think this was a good decision. It is a safe vehicle, it is a SUV type vehicle with all wheel drive, and all the bells and whistles. It was used, and still in excellent condition.

I have a habit of naming my cars. My tan Buick was called "Chet Burl Jacobson", although my sister called it the "turd", but I don't remember why. My last car, the Mercury Sable, was called "Wes" although I don't recall it's full name. This car will be named 'Royal Bill' Siemanzko. The names are not random, they have to do with the history of the vehicle, where they came from and the situation of how I came to find it. 'Royal Bill' is a very appropriate name for this vehicle, and I think I will stick to it. I am sure that my sister will come up with another nickname for it that would also be appropriate.

Enough car talk... I need to start discussing the 5K training plan. Starting this weekend, until October 7th, my life is going to be mostly devoted to training for the 5K. Today's motivational quote is key to the beginning of this training. Almost everyone who I have spoke to about the 5K has a first reaction: "You? You are too big to do a 5K. Why put yourself through that, it can't be good for you. You won't last."

I just keep thinking "I cannot discover that anyone knows enough to say definitely
what is and what is not possible." Good enough for Henry Ford? Good enough for me. Bring it on baby..

The picture at the top represents the enemy. Know thy enemy and my enemy is the St. Olaf 5K. I can't guarantee that this is the exact route, but it will be something like that.

I will be posting the training schedule on Monday, after my running partner and I have a chance to go over the details this weekend. I will be heading to the retreat in Wisconsin this weekend to breathe fresh air, forget about work and city hub-bub, and do a test 5K walk/jog. I am going to try to time it, so I will need to remember to bring a stopwatch. Where did I put that thing... ok, here it is. Maybe I will bring my pedometer too, to measure how many steps it takes to go 5K.

I will report all of my finding, of course, when I have time next week.

OOOOOOHHH I forgot.. I did measurements on Saturday, so I do need to do a little debriefing and update my stats.
