Todays motivation is from my departed colleague and friend, Jim Wise, who taught me to be at peace with whatever situation life hands me. He was very funloving and foolish on the outside, but "Wise" on the inside.
Galatians 6:9 Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Diary:
Ok, let's face it. The last week has been pretty much a mini-vacation for me. I haven't gone to the gym everyday, but did go on Wednesday and walked for about 2 1/2 - 3 miles.
I have been not sticking with my calorie counting, and I have been feeling it. I did write down some note about how I feel after eating foods like chinese take-out, pizza, fried chicken, and sugary cereals, (and beer). Here are my diary like notes:
"I have pain in my arms - feels like liquid steel being pushed through my blood vessels in my shoulders and upper arms. A high pressure like feeling. I am hot, all over my body. I feel like my abdomen is emmitting a hot steam, and my skin feels really warm. I am feeling lethargic. I have pain in my stomach this morning (Wed morn) and I am having much pain in my digestive track while going to the bathroom. Again, my whole stomach and intestines feel "hot". My fingers are starting to tingle. In the car on the way to work, I felt acid in my upper stomach and felt like I needed a Tums. I missed breakfast this morning, becuase I had beer and chinese food last night, and I feel like it is still sitting there. I don't think I could cram breakfast into my stomach. I am having problems focussing at work, and am feeling moody. I feel equivelant to hung-over, but without the alcohol. I am getting stressed out about little things and I want to scream and yell at people who cut me off on the highway, and the stupid Mortgage people called today and I wanted to argue with them, because they are so stupid.
I feel bloated and fat. It hurts to poop. "
Notes:
This weekend is a weigh in and measurement weekend, and although I feel like I really screwed up for the last week (which probably I have), the truth is, (I have already weighed in) I have only gained 4 lbs. Ok, that is bad, but I thought it might be worse.
Anyway, next week I am starting a new (not new to me, but new to F25K) routine. I am going to follow the Lean For Life plan. This doesn't mean I will stop counting calories, but I think I need to mix it up a little, and the LFL system is well known and endoressed by many clinics and doctors. I am going to work on the planning and preperation this weekend. The LFL program is a little more strict with what I eat and when I eat it, but it is fairly easy to follow, and now that I have proved my conviction, will probably have no problems, and might actually like it better than the calorie counting I have been doing. I will explain more about LFL as I go along.
The preperation time spent might actually decrease once I get into the program, so this is good.
Well, on Monday I will try to give the big results from this measurement weekend. dont' look for anything special....
On Saturday I have been invited to a bike ride. I haven't ridden a bike in - well, decades, so I am little nervous. I hear that getting back into bicycling is easy - it is like riding a bike.
Woah, time to stop writing.....
3 WAYS TO SHOP SMARTER - from my Men's Health reading
Visit the Grocer after Dinner
Always shop on a full stomach. Then your good sense won't have to fight bad advice from hungry tastebuds.
Spend Your Bread Wisely
A dark complexion in bread might be courtesy of molasses or food dyes. A loaf with seeds or oatmeal flakes on top isn't necessarily high in fiber.
To be sure you're a bread winner, look for the phrase "100 percent whole-wheat" or "whole-grain."
Steam the Dream
Broccoli is the king of vegetables. It's high in fiber and more densely packed with vitamins and minerals than almost any other food. In fact, a cup of steamed broccoli delivers almost half the recommended dietary allowance of vitamin A, more than 150 percent of vitamin C, 7 percent of calcium, 13 percent of iron, 8 percent of thiamine, and 5 percent of niacin--a real bargain at only 44 calories. Ounce for ounce, steamed fresh broccoli contains nearly 90 percent of the vitamin C of fresh orange juice and almost half as much calcium as milk.
Have Another Pint
Blueberries are one of the most healthful foods you can eat. They beat out 39 other fruits and vegetables in the antioxidant power ratings, making them a great hedge against cellular damage that contributes to heart disease and cancer. One study also found that rats who gobbled blueberries were more coordinated and smarter than rats who didn't. Make it your goal to eat a pint of blueberries every week.
Soak 'em in Vinegar
If a vitamin doesn't break down within 20 to 30 minutes, it will bypass the first part of the small intestine, where most nutrients are absorbed. To see how well your vitamin is being absorbed, drop it in a glass of vinegar. If it doesn't break down in 30 minutes, try another brand.
more later,
Chazz
